In spring and early summer, the lushness of the bright blue Western Larkspur (Delphinium hesperium) with its delicate petals stands in striking contrast to the scrubbiness of the desert surrounding it. Standing out this way of course demands some protection, and though sheep and other Nevada wildlife eat it, the Larkspur’s alkaloids are poisonous to cattle until after blossoming.
